SUBJECT :
THE FIGURES or ODOU of IFA from P. G. Aclinou ( pal.aclinou@wanadoo.fr )
We approach the examination of the fundamental element of the pedagogy in the cultural of Yoruba people. It is to tell : the DU or DUNON or ODOU. It concern the 256 figures or sign or diagrams of Ifa
CONSTITUTION
Each sign is composed of two tetragram identical or non. For example :

These
figures are make with two basic elements that are :

These two characters are going to give bird to what I can call the basic " alphabet " ; it is to tell :
We have therefore 16 TETRAGRAMES ; this is the maximum number on the basis of 4 characters by figures. In the practice of Ifa, each figures wears a name that serves as basis to the denomination of the dou.
Here is the list:
This are there 16 "paths of the knowledge" 16 "sons" of Ifa whose speaks the tradition and that I develop on the site.

It is necessary to signal that names that I indicate are these to which I am habitude ; but it is necessary to understand that according to regions and according to particular habits, these names can present some differences.
Here is some examples: Ogbe, Otura, Oturapô... for Gbe, Tula, Turukpê. I will have the opportunity to specify others aspects that differ according to regions.
This "alphabet" is going to allow us to access to signs or figures of Ifa by association of elements two to two; for example:

We find thus, mother signs that are formed by the doubly of symbol of the alphabet; this doubly is going to mark by the term "MEDJI" or "MEJI" ; term that means only double and nothing other ; for example : Sa Meji means Sa - double.
I propose you here - under 16 mother figures

These major figures are told mothers because this are they that are to the basis of the pedagogy Yoruba. In reality, this are 8 couples. The first figures is male, the following is female, that that follows is male, and so.
After mother figures arrive secondary figures that are formed from the alphabet by association two to two. We will see some examples in the following digest; similarly that we will examine the order of figures and the manner to obtain them. I will make equally some notice on the total number (256) of figures, because some authors indicate extravagant numbers that result from the bad comprehension of the system. This will be for us the opportunity to tell a word on the system of Chinese TRIGRAMMES and TETRAGRAMMES
To be continuing ?
Best salutations. P. G. Aclinou
